Microplastic Filter For Your Washing Machine

Last updated 10/02/2023 12:22

Congratulations on your purchase of an Electrolux microplastic filter. This easy-to-use washing machine accessory is one of the great first steps you can take towards playing an active part in helping to take care of our planet.

The benefits of using a microplastic filter

Microplastics are pieces of plastic material smaller than 5 mm that come from mainly two sources. Primary microplastics are directly released into the environment as small particles. And secondary microplastics originated from the breakdown of larger plastic objects.

When synthetic clothing and fabrics are washed, they can release microplastic fibres into the laundry wastewater. Your innovative Electrolux microplastic filter helps to capture most of these microplastic fibres before they enter the laundry wastewater.

Getting started

Phase one: Verify the box contents

Inside the microplastic filter packaging you will find the following items:

Phase two: Required tools

Gather and prepare the necessary tools so you can safely install your microplastic filter. To properly install your microplastic filter you will need:

1. Screwdriver (Phillips head), 2. Screwdriver (Flat head), 3. Gloves, 4. Meter, 5. Driller (bit 6mm), 6. Hammer, 7. Pencil, 8. Bubble level.

Phase 3: Find the proper space

For safe and proper installation, the microplastic filter must be securely installed on the wall next to your washing machine. To avoid leakages, do not place the microplastic filter directly above your washing machine, instead install the microplastic filter approximately 110 cm above floor level on the left or right side of your washing machine.

For more details and safety information, please check the User Manual included in the packaging.

Phase 4: Installation

Now you are ready to install the microplastic filter.

Step #1
With the help of a flat screwdriver., take out the filter from the packaging box and remove the wall support from the microplastic filter.

Step #2

The position of your filter must comply with the following conditions in steps 2a and 2b:

Step #2a:

Position the wall support at the correct height, measuring 110 cm* from top of the wall support to the floor (or pedestal if present).

*Tolerance admitted in filter height position is +/- 5 cm.

- Check where is your point of drainage before positioning the wall support. The microplastic filter is equipped with one drainage hose with a length of 100 cm.

- Make sure to have enough space above your microplastic filter before positioning the wall support. The filter requires at least 40 cm of free unobstructed space above the filter, in order for you to take out and put in the cartridge.

Step #2b:

While preparing the 3 drilling targets, make sure to have the wall support evenly aligned with the help of a levelling tool.

Step #3

Drilling holes into the wall and putting in place the anchors.

WARNING! Before drilling into the wall, make sure no water pipes or electrical conducts are behind the wall you are drilling through. The drill bit recommended is ф 6mm. The microplastic filter package supplies three screws and a plastic anchor that helps you to install the filter properly. The tools provided to install your filter, work for walls made of bricks.

WARNING! If your wall is made from a different material other than brick, please be sure to choose the proper anchor and screws that will help you achieve a safe and functional installation according to the type of material your wall is made from.

Step #4
Mount the wall support with the screws and the plastic anchor provided, ensuring that the wall support is stable and properly aligned.

Step #5
Take the pipes, the collars, and the microplastic filter body. Place the collars on the pipes and connect the pipes to the filter body following the IN/OUT indications present on the back of the filter body:

IN: pipe which comes from the washing machine into the filter.
OUT: pipe (present in the filter package) which goes to the drain.

WARNING! Before connecting the drainage pipe to the external accessory/microplastic filter, be sure that the washing machine is turned OFF and unplugged from the electrical socket.

Tighten the collars with a screwdriver. In order to complete the connection correctly, the collars must be applied. Follow the instructions exactly to ensure the collars proper position.

When using the screwdriver, make sure to not damage the filter body or any pipes.

Step #6
Following the movement shown in the picture, attach the body to the wall support, making sure you hear the "click" which verifies that the body is correctly attached to the wall support.

Now that you got your Electrolux microplastic filter ready to go, let’s walk you through some simple steps on how to keep it working at its best.

Maintaining and cleaning your Electrolux microplastic filter

The Electrolux microplastic filter is an easy-to-use accessory and is a great step towards playing an active part in helping to take care of our planet. With just a little help from you, this accessory can keep doing its job of capturing microplastic fibres released from synthetic fabrics.

How to keep your Electrolux microplastic filter running at its best

When it is full the indicator on the cover will change to red notifying you that the cartridge needs to be cleaned.

Note: When the filter is full it will not interrupt the washing cycle, instead the filter will allow water to bypass the filter. But just so you know, the filter will not collect any more microplastic fibres until you clean it.

Cleaning the filter and microplastic disposal

Step #1 Opening the filter
Open the filter by rotating the cover counterclockwise from the lock symbol to the unlock symbol (visible on the front of the filter case as shown in picture 2) and lift up the cover.

Step #2 Preparing to clean the cartridge
So, before you begin cleaning the cartridge, note that it could be full of wastewater. We suggest using a bucket or small plastic container, this can help keep your space tidy.

Step #3 Cleaning the cartridge

Now here is the fun part, once you place the cartridge inside a container to help contain any water spillage, just grab the brush that was supplied with the microplastic filter, and with up and down brushing movements, remove as much of the fibres as possible that are attached to the cartridge. You can also use a paper towel to collect as much material as possible.

Step #4 Waste disposal
To keep using the filter in an environmentally friendly way, avoid using water to clean the filter or running it under water. Instead, throw away the collected waste in a designated dustbin. When the cartridge is empty of water, remove the dirt from inside of the cartridge and dispose of it in a dry waste bin.

CAUTION! Waste collected by the cartridge contains microplastics, microfibre residuals, detergent residuals, and dirt. IT MUST be disposed of in a DRY waste bin.

Step #5 Reconnecting the cover

Before reconnecting the cartridge cover, you need to reset the dial and remove the water inside the cover. Hold the cover, rotate it as in picture 10, and make sure all the water is drained in a separate container, and the dial indicating red is no longer visible when the cover is placed on the filter.

Step #6 – Reconnecting the cartridge
To reconnect the cartridge:
1. Insert the cartridge
2. Hold the cartridge with one hand, then with the other hand rotate the cover clockwise – from unlock symbol to lock symbol.

Step #7 – Closing the filter
1. Insert the cartridge with the cover inside the filter casing,
2. Rotate the cover clockwise – from unlock symbol to lock symbol.

Enjoy doing laundry in a more sustainable way with your Electrolux microplastic filter.
