Dispelling the myths of dishwashing

The Green Machine

It comes as a surprise to many people, but using a dishwasher is better for the environment than washing by hand.  You would need 103 litres of water to wash by hand the same size load that a dishwasher would use just 12litres for!

A question of loading

We have a few more tips to help make your dishwasher more efficient. Always fill your dishwasher to its capacity but make sure you don't over stack it. You want to give the water room to do its work. Place hollow items like glasses and cups face down and select the economy or short cycle for dishes that are only slightly dirty.

Keep it clean

Cleaning your dishwasher is important for keeping it efficient. Change the filter regularly and definitely don't run it without one. And here's a tip for keeping your dishwasher in tip-top condition. Every now and then, place a small amount of vinegar in an open container, put it in the dishwasher and run it on a full cycle. That will keep it sparkling clean, so your dishes will be too.

Do something more interesting

300 hours per year. On average, that's the amount of time a family of four could save by washing the dishes with a dishwasher rather than by hand. Think of what you could do with that!
